Yukon Parks Youth Trainee - Term Full Time (June 5 – August 31, 2017)

Reporting to the Heritage Liaison, this student trainee position is based at the Tombstone Interpretive Centre and is primarily responsible for working with the Park Interpreter and Heritage Liaison, Interpretive Supervisor and Interpretive staff to provide information and interpretive services to park visitors. This position may also have opportunities to work with park maintenance and park ranger staff. This position provides effective seasonal delivery of up to date information and key messaging to Interpretive Centre and Yukon Parks' visitors. This position provides experience in an overview of the variety of positions available in Yukon Parks and promotes awareness of careers in the Environment Sector. The position provides citizens the opportunity to gain work experience and skills that will increase employability and ongoing participation in the labor market.

SKILLS TO BE GAINED:
· Experience developing and delivering a short interpretive program for the public on cultural and natural themes related to Tombstone; (research, field investigations and collecting materials that support the programs);
· Experience with Interpretive staff in guiding hikes, informal roving and campfire presentations;
· Public reception and speaking skills by responding to visitor inquiries regarding the park environment such as plants, wildlife, landscape, appropriate use of facilities and backcountry;
· Administrative tasks such as collecting visitor and wildlife stats, bear observation reports;
· Opportunity to gain some experience with wildlife monitoring studies i.e. pika, butterfly, duck and sheep;
· Ability to collect and contribute images and data to support research park and promotion initiatives;
· Some outdoor wilderness skills and backcountry hiking;
· Knowledge of Tombstone Territorial park management plan;
· Knowledge and experience with acts and regulations;
· Leadership and mentorship skills.

ESSENTIALS:
· Must be a TH citizen, ages 18 - 30;
· Must have an interest in natural and cultural heritage;
· Basic knowledge of computers;
· Good communication skills;
· Demonstrated experience in camp situations;
· Must be able to work independently and in a team environment;
· Good communication skills, both oral and written.
· Must be punctual and reliable;
· A positive role model for youth; must lead a healthy lifestyle.

ASSETS:
· Knowledge of TH history, culture and traditions;
· Knowledge of natural and/or cultural/historical aspects of Tombstone Park.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
· Mandatory confidentiality is a condition of employment for all TH personnel. Failure to meet this requirement could result in dismissal;
· Willingness to obtain Wilderness First Aid, Bear Aware, Interpreter, Helicopter Safety, Evacuation & Back Packing Trip training;
· Willingness to live and work in a remote location (Tombstone Park). Incumbent must supply own food. Limited accommodations will be provided;
· Willingness to work with TH Heritage Sites Supervisor to coordinate transportation to and from Park.
· Willingness to provide parental consent to accept position and work and live in remote location.
