Position: Literacy Support Worker

Department: Education

Term: Part Time Casual (August 26, 2019- June 12, 2020)

Reporting to Manager of School Age Education, the Literacy Support Worker is responsible for providing after school reading, activities, and story-telling to individuals and small groups, as well as assisting with homework club.

The outcome of the literacy support initiative is to improve the reading skills of Citizens of Kwanlin Dun First Nation who are in the elementary grades.

The Literacy Support Worker will be a positive role model and leader to the KDFN children and youth partaking in the initiative, they will be creative thinkers and have basic problem solving abilities and demonstrate patience and understanding. Respect and ability to pass along KDFN cultural and historical knowledge will also be required.

Preference to KDFN Citizens and KDFN students in grade 11 or 12, or registered with Yukon College

Qualifications and experience:
• Grade 11 to 12 education, Yukon College programs are an asset;
• Experience working with school aged children one on one and in small groups;
• Experience reading and storytelling;
• Ability to engage with and relate well with KDFN primary aged children;
• Knowledge of KDFN history, culture, demographics, goals and aspirations;
• Knowledge of the social structure in KDFN, KDFN children and families, the social conditions and dynamics prevailing in the community.

Job Requirements: Satisfactory criminal records check with vulnerable sector completed; valid Yukon driver's license is an asset; availability for after school programming throughout the school year (approximately 2:30pm to 4:30pm 4 days a week).

Salary: $22.51/hour
