Description/Duties
Important Notes:
We are looking to hire a Carpenter for a 7-month term this summer from May 15, 2023 To Dec 22, 2023. For this process, we expect to conduct the interview and other assessments in late March. This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic profiles in same or other parts of the country. The salary for this position is $31.24 to $33.95 (per hour, plus applicable Isolated Post Allowance; salary under review).

Duties:
As part of our dynamic and skilled carpentry team in Dawson, you will be working on the National Historic Sites located in and around Dawson, YT. 

You will be performing skilled carpentry work on historic and contemporary assets.  This work would include foundation upgrades, roof upgrades to vessel structural repairs, inspecting facilities for defects and working with a multi-disciplinary team to repair and maintain our heritage structures.  As a carpenter, you will have the opportunity to lead different projects in collaboration with the Carpentry Supervisor. 
Requirements/Qualifications
What are we looking for?

EDUCATION: 
  • Successful completion of a post-secondary program relevant to the position OR an acceptable combination of education, training and experience
  • Journeyman Carpenter Certificate 

EXPERIENCE: 
  • Experience* working as a journeyman carpenter
  • Experience in the safe and appropriate use and maintenance of power, hand tools and construction equipment used in the building trades
  • Experience in the inspection, repairing and maintenance of heritage structures
* We are looking for minimum one (1) year of experience. carpenter

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:
English Essential 

KNOWLEDGE: 
  • Knowledge of building maintenance and construction techniques in historic and contemporary assets
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in the building trades
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, as they relate to the employee and employer, and able to demonstrate a culture of safety in the work environment

ABILITIES: 
  • Ability to use, inspect, and maintain a wide range of shop tools associated with carpentry
  • Ability to review and interpret conceptual building/construction plans
  • Ability to work independently, plan, assess and adjust varied priorities
  • Ability to work as a team and provide leadership on the jobsite
  • Ability to estimate materials, costs and tools required to plan and execute a project
  • Ability to demonstrate a culture of health and safety (OH&S) and inclusivity

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 
This position requires the incumbent to: 
  • Wear a Parks Canada uniform
  • Work weekends, shift work and irregular hours as required, with advance notice
  • Use appropriate safety equipment and protective equipment at all times in the performance of duties
  • May be required to perform heavy lifting as well as working in cramped and awkward positions
  • Successfully complete safety courses and training, as required (e.g.: Standard First Aid, Fall Arrest, WHMIS, CLC training, etc.)
  • Travel / work in a variety of weather conditions and terrain

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Reliability Status security clearance
  • Possess and maintain a valid class 5 Drivers’ Licence
  • Successfully pass and maintain pre-employment Occupational Health Assessment and periodic medical checks
