Description/Duties

This is a term position with the possibility of permanent

Reporting to the Heritage Collections Manager or designate, the Collections Assistant will assist in managing all aspects of cataloguing new and backlogged acquisitions to the TTC permanent collection. The incumbent will perform the following: accessioning, photo recording, digitizing, cataloguing, researching documentation and history of objects, conserving, cataloguing artifacts, updating and maintaining the collections database and other inventories, and assisting in maintaining the collection conservation program. You may be required to perform any of the following: copying research material, updating inventories for Heritage database, write articles for the TTC newsletter, other related duties, as required.

Main Duties:

Cataloguing
  • Assist and support the Heritage Collections Manager in the care for artifacts and permanent art within the heritage collections
  • Update and maintain collection records for TTC’s Heritage collections including accession records, donor files, and artifact loans and finding aides in both electronic hard copy format.
  • Use the standards of art and artifact cataloguing as well as File Maker Pro software.
  • Use Chenhall’s nomenclature and other standards to catalogue new acquisitions on the File Maker pro collections database.

Digital Photography
  • Photograph each artifact to be catalogued
  • Import the image into the collections database

Inventorying
  • Existing artifacts
  • Library and research file inventories will be updated
  • Review existing inventories and add or change the information as required

Education & Experience:
Post-secondary degree in administration, research or heritage related studies or relevant field and/or equivalency obtained through coursework and/or experience. Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Good knowledge of TTC social and Government structure, culture and traditions, knowledge of TTC Land Claims agreements and Constitution;
  • Good working knowledge of the heritage and culture issues affecting First Nations people;
  • Sensitivity, understanding and knowledge of Tlingit traditions, values and culture;
  • Knowledge of TTC policies and procedures
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
