Reporting to the Education Manager, the Counsellor for Indigenous Youth is responsible for overseeing, planning and delivering prevention-based counselling and therapeutic programming that relates to mental and emotional wellness to Indigenous students at Robert Service School. This position will provide supports to indigenous students who are struggling within the education system for a variety of factors as it relates to wellness. The Counsellor for Indigenous Youth will primarily focus on assisting to maintain student attendance and participation at school and work closely with the Education Support Workers, Community Education Liaison Coordinators and Education Manager. This position may also assist and participate in advising as it relates to curriculums and programs to reduce or remove barriers that are impacting indigenous students.

An Eligibility List may be established from this competition – the duration of the eligibility list may be up to 12 months. The eligibility list may be used to fill future permanent full-time, permanent part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time, term, or auxiliary on-call vacancies within the same department and classification based on the organizational needs by going the next highest ranked candidate until the eligibility list expires.

Essential Qualifications:

Grade 12, with a Masters Degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or other related field( Bachelors Degree along with significant equivalent and relevant work experience may be considered);
Strong counselling and therapy skills, including therapeutic models and learning materials.
Ability to provide sound advice, skills and tools relating to behavioral and emotional management.
Experience in program delivery and provision of support services to clients including parent education, mediation and life skills management.
Strong knowledge in the effects of FASD, ADHD, Autism spectrum disorder and other physical disabilities, mental wellness and concurrent disorders.
Sound trauma-informed practice and PTSD recovery knowledge.

Assets:

Strong planning, organization and time management skills.
Strong advocacy skills.
Strong administrative skills and computer proficiency including Microsoft Office programs and budgeting.
Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in government structure, culture, traditions, history, demographics, family structures.
