Salary: Level 3 Step 1 ($27.90 hourly)

Reporting to the Children's Programs Coordinator, this position is responsible for the supervision of the Healthy Active Youth (HAY) programming, including the After School Program for elementary age TH youth. The After School Program runs during the academic year from 2:30/3:30-5pm. This position works out of Kajit In Zho with programming based at various TH and community venues. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that programming activities meet the goals of each program, by assisting with the development of daily activities that help the youth to gain: personal competencies (i.e. life skills), self-confidence and self-awareness, social and relationship skills, group interaction and conflict resolution capabilities, problem-solving and leadership skills, and opportunities to learn traditional knowledge and explore TH culture. The position will ensure the delivery of programming activities through a mentorship approach with the assistance of TH Elders/citizens and community support people (as needed). The incumbent is responsible for ensuring YG regulations and/or TH policies are followed at all times.The position provide mentorship, support and guidance to the Student Activity Leader.

An Eligibility List may be established from this competition — the duration of the eligibility list may be up to 12 months. The eligibility list may be used to fill future permanent full-time, permanent part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time, term, or auxiliary on-call vacancies within the same department and classification based on the organizational needs by going the next highest ranked candidate until the eligibility list expires.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with pre-adolescent youth in a summer camp, outdoor education program, or extracurricular or afterschool program environment.
  • Experience leading youth activities, recreational programs, group excursions.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
  • Good communication skills including: listening, verbal, written, and speaking with groups of youth.

Assets:
  • Knowledge of risk management policies, planning and practices.
  • Cross cultural awareness, sensitivity and understanding.
  • Knowledge of youth development theory, principles and practices with a specific focus on pre-adolescent (ages 8-12) youth as well as, an understanding of the social-emotional and developmental challenges that may be associated with this age group.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening;
  • Class 5 Driver's License with clear driver's abstract.
  • Willingness to obtain a Class 4 Driver's license, if requested.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR certification.
  • WHMIS and Food Safe certification, or willingness to obtain.
